This international workshop was organized in order to identify factors of unsustainability and over exploitation in fisheries and review major issues in the implementation of international fisheries instruments. The Workshop was based on a review of discussion papers that took into account the outcomes of the previous workshops on these issues. It addressed the following thematic issues: governance and fisheries management, causes or solutions for unsustainability, access and fishing rights, fishery management and sustainability dimensions, and small scale issues and developing country perspective. This document contains the report of the Workshop and eighteen discussion papers submitted by participants.

The purpose of the Expert Consultation was to generate practical guidance regarding the range of funding arrangements that are available for funding fisheries management as part of FAO's ongoing efforts to assist countries in the implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. This document also includes the extensive background documentation, as well as six case studies expanding on how different countries finance fisheries management.
Recommendations made include the need: for a background study and consultation on the normative framework for fish trade and food security, for the preparation of technical guidelines on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF), fish trade and food security, and better training to improve capacity of policy makers and technical personnel on international issues dealing with fish trade and food security.
The Workshop on the Age Estimation of Sardine and Sardinella in Northwest Africa was organized in Casablanca, Morocco, from 4 to 9 December 2006. The Workshop was funded by project GCP/INT/730/NOR International Cooperation with the Nansen Program. Fisheries Management and Marine Environment and organized by FAO and the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH). Altogether 15 scientists from seven countries and FAO participated. The Workshop reviewed and discussed the results of an otolith exchange that had been carried out in 2006 and which included both sardine and sardinella otoliths from different locations.
