Common carp is one of the oldest cultured and most domesticated fish in the world, and is a very adaptable species in both the wild and in culture coditions. The genetic resources of common carp maintained at the Fish Culture Research Institute in Szarvas, Hungary, are described in this paper. The genetic improvement of common carp in Hungary started in 1962. Five main features were evaluated that determined the economic value of the resulting strains: survival, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, slaughter value and fat content of the meat. The Fish Culture Research Institute plays a key role in a national breeding programme in Hungary that provides fish farms and fish seed production units with parental lines of hybrid common carp.

The purpose of the Expert Consultation was to generate practical guidance regarding the range of funding arrangements that are available for funding fisheries management as part of FAO's ongoing efforts to assist countries in the implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. This document also includes the extensive background documentation, as well as six case studies expanding on how different countries finance fisheries management.
Recommendations made include the need: for a background study and consultation on the normative framework for fish trade and food security, for the preparation of technical guidelines on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF), fish trade and food security, and better training to improve capacity of policy makers and technical personnel on international issues dealing with fish trade and food security.
The Workshop on the Age Estimation of Sardine and Sardinella in Northwest Africa was organized in Casablanca, Morocco, from 4 to 9 December 2006. The Workshop was funded by project GCP/INT/730/NOR International Cooperation with the Nansen Program. Fisheries Management and Marine Environment and organized by FAO and the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH). Altogether 15 scientists from seven countries and FAO participated. The Workshop reviewed and discussed the results of an otolith exchange that had been carried out in 2006 and which included both sardine and sardinella otoliths from different locations.
