This publication gives an updated review of the quantity of discards in the world’s marine fisheries, using information from a broad range of fisheries in all continents. A number of policy issues are discussed including a ‘no discards’ approach to fisheries management, the need for balance between bycatch reduction and bycatch utilisation initiatives, and concerns arising from incidental catches of marine mammals, birds and reptiles. The report also highlights the need for more robust methods of estimating discards, and the development of bycatch management plans.

  The purpose of the Expert Consultation was to generate practical guidance regarding the range of funding arrangements that are available for funding fisheries management as part of FAO's ongoing efforts to assist countries in the implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. This document also includes the extensive background documentation, as well as six case studies expanding on how different countries finance fisheries management.

  Recommendations made include the need: for a background study and consultation on the normative framework for fish trade and food security, for the preparation of technical guidelines on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF), fish trade and food security, and better training to improve capacity of policy makers and technical personnel on international issues dealing with fish trade and food security.

• Rapport De L Atelier Sur L Estimation De L âge De La Sardine Et De La Sardinelle En Afrique Du Nord Ouest

  The Workshop on the Age Estimation of Sardine and Sardinella in Northwest Africa was organized in Casablanca, Morocco, from 4 to 9 December 2006. The Workshop was funded by project GCP/INT/730/NOR International Cooperation with the Nansen Program. Fisheries Management and Marine Environment and organized by FAO and the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH). Altogether 15 scientists from seven countries and FAO participated. The Workshop reviewed and discussed the results of an otolith exchange that had been carried out in 2006 and which included both sardine and sardinella otoliths from different locations.
