Mark Grahames study, originally based around his doctoral thesis, discusses a new theoretical and methodological approach to interpreting the use of space and the `meaning of buildings, how people interact with them and the social factors that can be gleaned from them. 144 Pompeiian houses are subjected to Grahames access analysis, the results of which allow him to write a new interpretation of the rules governing the ordering of space, different spatial configurations within buildings, physical movement around houses and different social trends in using these built spaces.
